Real Madrid Star Expresses Disappointment After Missing Out on 2024 Nomination
Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has subtly expressed his disappointment over being left off the 2024 Ballon d’Or shortlist, despite a standout season with the club. The 23-year-old Brazilian posted an Instagram message featuring images of him celebrating Real Madrid’s La Liga, Champions League, and Spanish SuperCup victories, accompanied by a laughing crying emoji.
The Ballon d’Or shortlist, revealed on Wednesday, includes high-profile names like Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane. Several of Rodrygo’s Real Madrid teammates, including Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., and even the retired Toni Kroos, received nominations, but Rodrygo’s absence has raised eyebrows.
Rodrygo had an impressive 2023/24 season, scoring 17 goals and providing nine assists across competitions. Despite his notable contributions, including helping Real Madrid secure major titles, his exclusion from the prestigious award’s list has not gone unnoticed.
Earlier this year, Rodrygo spoke to Globo Esporte and backed teammate Vinicius Jr. for the award, saying: “We know that Vini is the main candidate to win it, and I support this decision because he is my teammate.” However, he also admitted that winning the Ballon d’Or is still a personal dream, even if it’s not his top priority.
Rodrygo has already made a strong start to the current season, scoring and assisting in Real Madrid’s opening matches, potentially setting himself up for future nominations. Meanwhile, Vinicius Jr. remains vocal about his desire to follow in the footsteps of Brazilian legends like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho by winning the Ballon d’Or, with both icons encouraging him to aim for the prestigious accolade.
