United legend counters former teammate’s claims, stating a player’s effort and application are ultimately their own responsibility.
A public disagreement has emerged between two Manchester United icons, as Wayne Rooney has directly challenged Marcus Rashford’s recent claims that the club’s turbulent environment was a primary cause for his struggles at Old Trafford.
In a candid interview, Rashford, who now plays for Barcelona, reflected on his challenging final years at United. He pointed to the constant change in the dugout, having worked under eight different managers since his debut, as a key reason for his inconsistent performances. “I feel like I have been in an inconsistent environment for a very long time,” Rashford stated, while also acknowledging his own need to “bring consistency into my game.”
However, Rooney, the club’s former captain and all-time top scorer, pushed back on his podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show. While agreeing that United’s environment has been far from ideal, he placed a greater onus on the player’s own role in determining their success.
“I think the environment hasn’t been right but that is down to yourself,” Rooney asserted. He suggested it can be “easier to blame the environment” when a player is left out of the team, but that ultimate responsibility lies in “how you apply yourself.”
The former England captain pointed directly to on-pitch effort as an area where Rashford could have improved, regardless of the surrounding circumstances. “In games we have seen with him where we know he can do more, we know he can run more—that is nothing to do with an environment,” Rooney said, adding that blaming external factors was “an easy one to throw at people.”
Rashford’s time at United concluded after he fell out of favor with manager Ruben Amorim, leading to a loan to Aston Villa and a subsequent move to Barcelona. His 10-year United career was nonetheless highly decorated, yielding 138 Premier League goals in over 400 appearances for the club.
