Players Just Don’t Do Enough, Says Furious Club Legend in Scathing Post-Match Critique
Former captain Roy Keane unleashed a blistering assessment of Manchester United’s current squad after watching them fall 2-1 to high-flying Aston Villa on Sunday, accusing key players of failing to “roll their sleeves up” when it matters most.
In a passionate rant on Sky Sports, the iconic Irish midfielder directed sharp criticism at defender Diogo Dalot and others, claiming they simply are not doing enough for the team, especially in critical defensive moments.
“You can have all the talent in the world,” Keane began, his frustration palpable. “But there’s too many players, like Dalot, that just don’t do enough. I won’t use the word cheating, but they’re not just doing enough. After the game, I’d be looking at him.”

The defeat, sealed by Morgan Rogers’ brilliant solo double for a Villa side enjoying a ten-game winning streak, was compounded by a first-half injury to captain Bruno Fernandes. His departure, coupled with the existing absence of Kobbie Mainoo and several players at the Africa Cup of Nations, forced manager Ruben Amorim to hand Premier League debuts to academy prospects Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey.
United defender Diogo Dalot, speaking after the match, acknowledged the crisis brings opportunity. “This is the time when opportunities come for other players,” he told Sky Sports. “You have to step up and show you deserve to be in the team.”
The loss leaves United seventh in the table, three points off the top four, and facing a quick turnaround. Their next test is a Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford against Newcastle United, a match where the spirit and effort demanded by Keane will be under intense scrutiny.
