The former United captain slams lackluster performance, calls the team “boring” and lacking conviction
Roy Keane didn’t hold back after Manchester United’s draw with Chelsea, taking aim at interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy’s post-match comments. Van Nistelrooy, who recently stepped in following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, had described the team as a “good group” of players, a sentiment Keane found unconvincing.
The 1-1 draw saw Moises Caicedo’s volley cancel out Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, leaving United fans hoping for more under Van Nistelrooy’s temporary leadership. However, Keane, a legend at Old Trafford, criticized both the performance and the positive spin from Van Nistelrooy.
On Sky Sports, Keane responded with his trademark sarcasm: “Don’t worry about the result. He said they’re great lads? That’s key.” He then went on to call United’s play “almost boring,” adding, “They have a lack of conviction in their chances. They were so flat; the fans must be disappointed. They’re a long way from competing for a top-four spot.”
Keane’s analysis didn’t end there. He described the team as “average at everything” and lamented their struggle to score, a problem he believes has cost managers their jobs. “The lack of goals is still hard to believe,” Keane said. “They’re creating opportunities but missing – it’s properly hit and miss, more likely a miss.”
The former United captain’s frustrations reflect those of many fans, who have grown restless with the team’s inconsistency and flat performances. Van Nistelrooy will manage two more United matches before Ruben Amorim takes over, with his final games including a Europa League fixture against PAOK and a league match against Leicester.
