Roy Keane Warns Arsenal Against Ollie Watkins Move: “Maybe Villa Is His Level”

Manchester United Legend Questions Striker’s Suitability for Top Clubs as Gunners Eye Summer Swoop

Manchester United icon Roy Keane has cautioned Arsenal against pursuing a summer deal for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, suggesting the England international may not be cut out for the demands of a top-tier club. The Gunners, who failed to secure Watkins during the January transfer window, are reportedly preparing to reignite their interest in the 29-year-old striker ahead of the 2025 season. However, Keane believes Watkins might have found his ideal level at Villa Park.

Speaking after Aston Villa’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Cardiff City on Friday, Keane acknowledged Watkins’ qualities but expressed doubts about his ability to thrive at an elite club. “I like Watkins,” the former Manchester United captain said. “I think he’s a really good player, I think he’s a threat, but maybe this [Aston Villa] is his level. I know he’s been linked with other clubs, but sometimes you go, ‘Maybe you’re not going to be that top, top striker.’”

Watkins has been a key figure for Villa this season, contributing 13 goals and 11 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. However, his record of missing 22 big chances in the Premier League this campaign—the highest of any player—has raised questions about his consistency in front of goal. Despite this, his performances have kept him in the conversation for a potential big-money move, with his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently standing at €65.8 million.

Arsenal’s interest in Watkins comes as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of the 2025 season. The Gunners were unable to sign a striker in January, despite injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, and are now reportedly targeting Watkins alongside RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak has also been linked with a move to the Emirates, though the Magpies are expected to demand a fee exceeding €150 million for the Swedish star.

Keane’s comments, however, could give Arsenal pause for thought as they weigh up their options. While Watkins has proven himself as a reliable performer in the Premier League, the former midfielder’s skepticism about his ability to make the leap to a title-chasing side like Arsenal may resonate with some fans and pundits.

For now, Watkins remains focused on his role at Aston Villa, where he has just over three years left on his contract. As the summer transfer window approaches, the debate over his suitability for a club of Arsenal’s stature is likely to intensify. Whether the Gunners heed Keane’s warning or push ahead with a move for the Villa star remains to be seen.
