Sporting’s head coach reflects on his departure, understanding fan frustrations while affirming loyalty to his next chapter at United
Ruben Amorim, soon to take the reins at Manchester United, has acknowledged Sporting Lisbon fans’ frustrations over his departure but called the opportunity “now or never.” The announcement came just hours before Sporting’s recent Liga Portugal match, which saw a stunning 5-1 victory over Estrela Amadora, highlighted by Viktor Gyokeres’ remarkable four-goal performance.
Amorim’s move to United, which becomes official on November 11, was confirmed on Friday as his current team maintained a flawless league record, standing six points clear at the top. After the match, Amorim addressed the mixed emotions surrounding his exit, expressing empathy for fans who may feel let down. “For the next home game, win or lose, I’ll be there to see what the fans want to give me,” he shared. “I understand their anger, but we move on, and time heals everything. This has been the best period of my life.”
Amorim, who has led Sporting to two league titles, explained that this decision followed conversations with the club president at the season’s outset. He emphasized that although he hoped to stay until season’s end, United’s offer was final. “I asked United if we could wait until the season’s end; they said no. It was now or never,” he stated, adding, “No Sporting fan wanted me to stay until the end of the season more than I did. But it wasn’t possible.”
The coach also dismissed any suggestion that his choice was financially motivated. “It’s not about money. Other clubs offered three times more, and I declined,” he clarified. “This is about taking on the club I wanted.”
Fans at the Estadio Jose Alvalade demonstrated both respect and emotion during the night. As they gave Amorim a standing ovation, the stadium rang with the anthem “O Mundo Sabe Que,” set to the tune of “My Way.” In a touching response, Amorim applauded the crowd and blew kisses, showcasing his gratitude.
Gyokeres, who netted his fourth hat-trick this season, shared his thoughts on his manager’s departure at full-time. When asked about joining Amorim at United, he responded, “I don’t know. I’m here, and as you can see, I enjoy it.” Gyokeres added, “[I’m] sad that Amorim is leaving. He’s done amazing things here, and we’ll keep the same faith in the team. We all wish him the best.”
Amorim’s exit marks the close of a transformative chapter for Sporting, with both the fans and his players wishing him success in Manchester.
