Former Chief Scout Mick Brown Blames Manager’s Public Comments for Deepening Crisis at Old Trafford
Manchester United’s turbulent season has taken another turn for the worse, with manager Ruben Amorim facing fierce criticism for his handling of the club’s ongoing struggles. According to former United chief scout Mick Brown, Amorim’s public comments have severely damaged dressing room morale, leaving the team in disarray as they endure what could be the worst season in the club’s Premier League history.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, has struggled to turn things around at Old Trafford. With a win percentage of just 42% since his arrival, results and performances have continued to decline, leaving fans and insiders alike questioning his leadership. Brown, who maintains close ties to the club, has accused the Portuguese manager of making “ridiculous statements” that have further destabilized an already fragile squad.
“He comes out with some statements that would be better left unsaid,” Brown told Football Insider. “It’s his way of going about things, but I think it shows his lack of experience in England and in the Premier League. Making those types of statements usually comes back to bite you.”
Brown specifically pointed to Amorim’s recent remarks labeling the current squad as “the worst team in Man United history,” a comment he believes has crushed the players’ confidence. “For the players to hear that—it’s not going to do them any good. It’s destroying the morale in the dressing room,” he added.
The former scout also criticized Amorim for failing to identify and address the team’s issues, despite having managed over 20 games. “Now, he comes out saying if he knew what the problems were, he’d fix them. It’s his job to know what the problems are,” Brown said. “He’s managed about 20 games since he came in—that should be more than enough time to establish what issues you’ve got. There are serious questions being asked which, as of yet, he’s failed to answer.”
Amorim’s troubles deepened this week when he downplayed the importance of winning the Europa League, a statement that sparked further controversy among fans and pundits. With United’s Premier League campaign in tatters, the Europa League had been seen as a potential lifeline for salvaging the season.
Despite the criticism, Brown acknowledged that Amorim may still have the potential to succeed, albeit with a steep learning curve. “I’ve got nothing against Amorim. I’m sure he’s a good person and a good coach, but he’s now learning a lot about Manchester United,” he said.
As the pressure mounts, Amorim faces an uphill battle to restore both results and morale at Old Trafford. With the club’s storied reputation on the line, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the manager can weather the storm—or if the crisis at Manchester United is set to deepen even further.
