Sporting CP’s Amorim Downplays Reports of Old Trafford Move, Says Decision Not Yet Made
As rumors of a move to Manchester United continue to swirl, Ruben Amorim has clarified that no final decision has been made. Sporting CP announced on Tuesday that United had triggered Amorim’s release clause, allowing him to negotiate terms. However, after Sporting’s 3-1 victory over Nacional in the Portuguese League Cup that evening, Amorim told Sport TV that talks remain inconclusive.
“Nothing is decided yet. I don’t know if it’s my farewell game or not,” Amorim stated, maintaining a level of uncertainty amid mounting speculation. During the post-game press conference, Amorim fielded questions from reporters eager for updates on the Manchester United position. When asked directly about the potential move, Amorim acknowledged, “It’s my decision… I will explain everything when the time is right.”
When pressed on whether he’d be on the sidelines for United’s game at Old Trafford this weekend, Amorim laughed and responded, “I don’t know.” For now, he plans to lead Sporting’s training session on Wednesday, as the team prepares for their Liga Portugal clash with Estrela da Amadora on Friday.
Amorim has been on United’s radar following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, which came after United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season. Since joining Sporting in 2020, Amorim has led the club to two league titles, including their first in nearly two decades, and was also linked to the Liverpool role last summer.
With United’s search ongoing, the club’s fans and management alike are eager for clarity on whether Amorim will be the next to helm Old Trafford.
