United Manager Calls Recent Form “Unacceptable” After 3-1 Loss to Brighton
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim delivered a brutally honest assessment of his team’s struggles following a 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. The loss marked United’s fourth defeat at home in their last five games, leaving fans and players grappling with a difficult period.
Speaking after the match, Amorim described the result as “unacceptable” and warned supporters to brace themselves for more hardship as the club works to find stability.
“Another loss at home. It’s not acceptable, the way we suffered the goals,” Amorim said. “We can play some football in small moments, but it’s not consistent. We get nervous, and then we suffer a goal. After that, it’s really hard to turn things around. They were better again.”
Brighton Exposes United’s Vulnerabilities
Despite going into halftime level at 1-1, Brighton capitalized on United’s defensive frailties in the second half. Kaoru Mitoma restored the Seagulls’ lead, and a crucial mistake by goalkeeper Andre Onana gifted Georginio Rutter an easy goal to seal the win for Brighton.
Reflecting on the defeat, Amorim acknowledged the growing sense of unease within the team and pointed to recurring issues. “We were in the game, and then we suffered goals we simply cannot concede. It’s the same story—against Bournemouth, Nottingham, and now Brighton. We need to change, and we need to change fast.”
Amorim Defends Style of Play Despite Mounting Pressure
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag as manager in November, reaffirmed his commitment to his football philosophy, even as results remain elusive.
“I’m not going to change the way I see the game,” he said. “I know my methods will deliver results, but we need to survive this moment. I’m really sorry, but the fans are going to suffer.”
With only one shot on target during the entire match, Amorim admitted that the team’s performance levels have been far below expectations. “Everybody here is underperforming. It’s unacceptable to lose so many games for any Premier League club, let alone Manchester United,” he said.
A Grim Assessment and a Path Forward
Amorim didn’t shy away from harsh self-criticism, calling his team “maybe the worst in Manchester United’s history.” Despite the scathing assessment, he emphasized the importance of resilience.
“We have to acknowledge the reality and face the problem head-on. We need to survive this moment and work hard to turn things around. Imagine—fans are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. It’s a hard moment, but I know we can recover,” he said.
Manchester United will now look to regroup as they prepare for their UEFA Europa League clash against Rangers on January 23. They return to Premier League action with an away trip to Fulham on January 26, hoping to stem the tide of their recent poor form.
With fans growing restless and the pressure mounting, Amorim’s ability to stabilize the team will be put to the test in the coming weeks.
