United Manager Acknowledges Players’ Fear as Pressure Mounts at Old Trafford
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted his squad is struggling with anxiety and fear on the pitch ahead of their highly anticipated Premier League clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
The Red Devils are enduring a rough patch, sitting 14th in the table and just seven points clear of the relegation zone. With three consecutive league defeats, Amorim’s tenure since replacing Erik ten Hag in November has yielded just two victories in the Premier League.
Speaking to the BBC, the Portuguese coach candidly addressed the psychological challenges his players face:
“They are anxious, sometimes afraid on the pitch,” Amorim said. “We need the leaders to step up to help the other guys, and I’m the most responsible person here to improve the performances. You can see the players are trying, sometimes too anxious, too afraid to play football because this is a difficult moment, and we will help the players to be better.”
United’s last victory was a dramatic 2-1 win over Manchester City on December 15. Since then, they have suffered defeats to Bournemouth, Wolves, and Newcastle in the league, as well as a narrow 4-3 Carabao Cup loss to Tottenham.
The pressure is taking a toll not only on the players but also on Amorim himself.
“You can see in my face; you can compare it to when I arrived and now,” Amorim admitted. “Of course, there is a lot of pressure. For me, it’s about pride and performance. It’s harder when we don’t perform well.”
Amorim hinted at potential January transfer activity to strengthen the squad but remained tight-lipped about specific targets.
“When the window is open, we can try to do something, and we will try,” he said. “In the next weeks, we are going to have more time to train, and we can improve. That’s the only way. I will keep that to myself [who he wants to sign], but we’ll try to do something.”
As United head to Anfield, Amorim remains focused on restoring confidence and delivering results, recognizing that every game is crucial to turning around the club’s faltering season.
