Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has issued a stark appraisal of his team’s current state, acknowledging the gap between the club’s historic stature and its present performance levels. Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Nottingham Forest, Amorim said United are a “massive club but not a massive team.”
Reflecting on Arsenal Defeat
Amorim’s comments follow United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday, his first loss since taking charge at Old Trafford. Goals from Jurrien Timber and William Saliba left United languishing in the bottom half of the table after 14 matches, underlining the challenges facing the new boss.
“We know we are a massive club, but we’re not a massive team—yet,” Amorim admitted. “There’s no problem saying it because it’s clear. We have to believe more, and we have to be better, especially in the final third.”
Tempered Expectations for Fans
When asked about fans’ expectations, Amorim emphasized the need for patience as United rebuild.
“Our history is the best in the league, but that doesn’t change the present,” he said. “It’s a difficult position for the players to be in. We’re not the best team in the league right now, but we must focus on the little details to improve.”
Emphasis on Work-Rate and Pressing
The Portuguese coach also stressed the importance of hard work, particularly off the ball, as a foundation for future success.
“You can have the best players in the world, but if they don’t run, they won’t win,” Amorim explained. “We need to run like mad dogs. It’s about building that habit in training so it translates into matches. It’s not about being faster; it’s about working harder.”
Amorim also highlighted the need to instill his pressing philosophy, adding, “Every coach has a different method of pressing, but it starts with effort. Our players are professional athletes—they can adapt.”
