Sporting CP Coach to Replace Erik ten Hag, But Contract Negotiations Delay Move to Old Trafford
Manchester United’s search for a new manager has officially ended, with Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP set to take charge following the sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday. Sir Dave Brailsford, a senior advisor at the club, confirmed the appointment in a video posted on social media, though uncertainty remains over when Amorim will officially assume his role at Old Trafford.
Brailsford confirmed the news to fans outside the stadium, saying, “It’s done, it’s done, it’s done.” Amorim’s selection follows rumors that linked Manchester United with several other potential candidates, including former Chelsea manager Graham Potter, England head coach Gareth Southgate, and Barcelona’s Xavi. However, the highly-rated 39-year-old Portuguese coach quickly emerged as United’s top choice.
Despite the decision, logistical issues persist, with Sporting CP looking to secure compensation for Amorim and his backroom team, who are expected to join him in Manchester. The Portuguese club is holding out for additional funds to waive Amorim’s 30-day notice period, which could push back his start date by several weeks.
Ben Jacobs reported that Amorim is likely to stay with Sporting until their fixture against Braga on November 10. Sources close to the matter have suggested that an official announcement could come as early as Thursday, though both clubs have so far declined to comment. Jacobs also noted that sports scientist Paulo Barreira and fitness coach Emanuel Ferro are expected to follow Amorim to Manchester United, joining his long-time staff members Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, and Jorge Vital.
Assuming the contractual complexities are resolved in the coming days, Amorim’s first match as Manchester United manager is expected to be after the international break, with the team’s November Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town likely marking his official debut.
