United Boss Stresses Support for Striker, Acknowledges External Pressures on Career Choices
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has voiced his support for Marcus Rashford while questioning the influence of those surrounding the star striker. Rashford, 27, has been absent for three consecutive matches, including Sunday’s disheartening 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, a result that deepens the club’s struggles in the Premier League.
Rashford was also omitted from United’s recent 2-1 derby victory over Manchester City and their 4-3 Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat at Tottenham. His absence comes on the heels of an interview last week in which Rashford expressed his readiness for “a new challenge and the next steps” in his career, which began in United’s academy.
Amorim, speaking to Sky Sports on Monday, acknowledged the complexities of Rashford’s situation. “It is a hard situation, but I understand that players like Marcus often have a lot of people around them making choices, sometimes not the first idea of the player,” Amorim said.
He clarified that his focus remains on Rashford’s performance and development. “I’m always here to help Marcus, as I would any player. I think the interview was a collective decision, not just Marcus’ choice. For me, as a coach, my priority is how he trains and performs. The rest can be addressed later.”
United’s back-to-back home defeats, including the loss to Bournemouth, have left the club languishing in 13th place at Christmas—a stark contrast to their usual aspirations. Amorim emphasized the importance of Rashford’s contributions to the team moving forward.
“We need a lot right now from talented players like Marcus,” Amorim said. “For now, I’m focused on what he delivers on the pitch, not the interview.”
United face a crucial festive period, with a trip to Wolves on Boxing Day followed by a home match against Newcastle next Monday. Fans and pundits alike will watch closely to see if Rashford’s return can spark a turnaround for the struggling club.
