Under-pressure manager insists improvement is needed despite European progress
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has dismissed the idea that winning the UEFA Europa League would salvage what has been a disappointing season for the Red Devils. United advanced to the last 16 of the competition, where they will face Real Sociedad, but Amorim believes lifting the trophy would not be enough to mask the team’s struggles in the Premier League and other domestic competitions.
The Red Devils are currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, having won just three of their last 11 matches. Their recent FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham further intensified the pressure on Amorim, who took charge in November but has yet to inspire a significant turnaround in form. Speaking to TNT Sports, the Portuguese coach admitted that the season cannot be considered a success, regardless of their European campaign.
“In this club, everything is so important. Just the pressure of winning is always the same—not just winning, but also the performance,” Amorim said. “People look at this competition as the only one that can save our season. I don’t see it like that. Nothing can save our season. In this club, you have to perform in every competition.”
Amorim emphasized that his focus is on improving both himself and the team, rather than relying on a potential Europa League triumph to paper over the cracks. “I don’t look at things to save something. I just want to be better as a coach and for my team to perform better,” he added.
One of United’s most glaring issues this season has been their lack of goals. Striker Rasmus Hojlund, who arrived with high expectations, has scored just seven times this campaign, with his last goal coming 18 games ago in December. However, the Europa League has been a brighter spot for the 22-year-old Dane, with five of his goals coming in the competition. Amorim believes the tournament’s return offers Hojlund a chance to rediscover his form.
“In football, anything can change in one month. One game can change your way of seeing yourself,” Amorim said. “It’s another opportunity, and in football, it’s a good thing to have the next match to change things. We don’t create a lot of situations, and sometimes we cannot serve our forwards as we should. If we improve as a team, we are going to help every player.”
Amorim also acknowledged the intense scrutiny surrounding the club, with questions being raised about his future as manager. He admitted that the noise around United will not stop, regardless of results, but stressed the importance of returning to winning ways to lift the mood within the squad.
“This club has all the noises. If one subject ends, they will start another. We have to deal with that,” he said. “It will be really important. You can feel it—the week is so much different when we win games. Like in any team or football club, you need to win to be happy, to prepare for the next game. If not, it will be tougher.”
As Manchester United prepare for their Europa League clash with Real Sociedad, Amorim’s comments highlight the challenges facing the team both on and off the pitch. While European success would provide a welcome boost, the manager knows that long-term improvement is needed to restore the club to its former glory.
