Ruben Amorim Includes 16-Year-Old in Squad for Arsenal Clash

Young Talent Godwill Kukonki Set to Make Premier League Debut

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has taken a bold step by including 16-year-old Godwill Kukonki in the squad for tonight’s Premier League showdown against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The decision comes in the wake of Luke Shaw’s absence, confirmed by the defender in an emotional Instagram post on Tuesday. Shaw, 29, is sidelined due to injury, further compounding United’s defensive woes as Lisandro Martínez also misses the match due to suspension.

A Rising Star Steps Up

Kukonki, who has earned Amorim’s attention during first-team training sessions, is poised for potential action. The young defender traveled with the squad to Portman Road for United’s 1-1 draw against Ipswich on November 24 but didn’t feature in the matchday lineup. Tonight, however, could mark his debut on the Premier League stage.

The Stoke-on-Trent native is already turning heads with his towering 6’5” frame, versatility as both a left-back and centre-back, and comparisons to Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol. His technical skills and defensive capabilities offer United a much-needed option on the left side of the backline.

Amorim’s Faith in Youth

Speaking last week, Amorim emphasized his commitment to nurturing young talent from United’s academy.

“You need young guys, guys from the academy, for everything,” Amorim said. “To bring that history to the club because they feel the club in a different way. But also because you have rules about financial fair play. Everything is connected, and I will try to help all the players, especially the young ones.”

Kukonki’s Track Record

Kukonki has impressed in United’s Under-18s, contributing a goal and an assist in nine appearances this season. While he is yet to debut in Premier League 2, his inclusion in the senior squad for such a crucial fixture signals Amorim’s belief in his potential.

As United prepare to face Arsenal, all eyes will be on whether Kukonki gets his first taste of top-flight football—a testament to United’s enduring commitment to developing homegrown talent.
