United’s new head coach left disappointed by January window inactivity, as key departures stall and squad struggles persist.
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has reportedly been left “disappointed” and “frustrated” with the club’s hierarchy following a lackluster January transfer window, which has left him with limited options to revive the struggling Red Devils.
Amorim, who took over from Erik ten Hag in late 2024 after leaving Sporting Lisbon, has endured a rocky start to his tenure at Old Trafford. With eight losses in his first 20 matches across all competitions, the 39-year-old has faced an uphill battle to steady the ship. United’s recent form has been equally concerning, with the team sitting 14th in the Premier League form table and scraping past Leicester City in a nervy FA Cup fourth-round clash on Friday night.
The January transfer window was seen as a critical opportunity to begin the much-needed rebuild at United. However, the club’s activity fell short of expectations. Marcus Rashford and Antony were loaned out to Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively, while the only incoming signings were young talents Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven. This lack of significant reinforcements has left Amorim with a thin squad, particularly in attack, as United continue to struggle for consistency.
Despite the limited activity, Amorim has publicly taken responsibility for the club’s cautious approach in January. “We are taking a risk, but we want a different thing in the team, different profiles. It was my decision to do that,” he said. “I’m not naive. I know this is a sport of results, and we are in a difficult situation. But I have a clear idea of what I want to do, and I believe this will pay off in the end.”
However, behind the scenes, reports suggest Amorim is far from satisfied. According to Football Transfers, the Portuguese coach is “raging” at certain members of United’s hierarchy over their handling of key transfer dealings. The delayed departure of Rashford, in particular, is said to have left Amorim frustrated, as it prevented the club from securing a replacement in time.
The report also highlights Amorim’s annoyance at the failed exit of Casemiro. The 32-year-old midfielder, who has struggled for form and fitness, was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but negotiations reportedly stalled due to his high wages and United’s valuation. Amorim had hoped to reinvest in younger, more dynamic midfield options, but the inability to offload Casemiro has left the club financially constrained.
With the transfer window now closed, tensions could rise behind the scenes as Amorim seeks to impose his vision on the squad. How he navigates the challenges of managing underperforming stars like Casemiro and maintains his relationship with the club’s hierarchy may well define the early stages of his tenure.
