Sporting CP Manager Anticipates Final Decision Amid Complicated Negotiations, Hints at Potential November Start
Ruben Amorim’s expected move to Manchester United remains uncertain, as the Sporting CP manager hinted that a final announcement on the matter will not come until after Sporting’s game on Friday. Addressing the rumors, the 39-year-old manager told the press that the “soap opera” surrounding his anticipated departure is “coming to an end,” promising a clear decision by the weekend.
During a pre-match press conference, Amorim responded to questions about the ongoing negotiations before Sporting’s Primeira Liga match against Estrela. Sporting CP, currently top of the Portuguese league, are reportedly eager to retain Amorim through a series of crucial fixtures, including a Champions League clash with Manchester City, and a league match against Braga, ahead of the international break
.
“It’s difficult to focus on the games, but I’m managing to do so,” Amorim stated in Portuguese. “The fact that I can’t be clear creates a lot of difficulty for me. It’s a negotiation between two clubs. It’s never easy, even with the [release] clauses. They have to talk,” he added. Amorim assured the press that by the end of Friday’s game, his future would be confirmed.
After United’s sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday, the club has been swift in pursuing Amorim. However, negotiations around his release clause and contractual terms have introduced delays, with Sporting demanding compensation for both Amorim and his backroom staff. Despite complications, Manchester United board member Sir Dave Brailsford hinted to fans that “it’s done,” during a meet-and-greet after Wednesday’s League Cup win over Leicester City, although neither club has officially confirmed the appointment.
Reflecting on the Premier League’s allure, Amorim shared, “There are times in life when you’re doing really well, but you want something more. It’s about taking that next step to prove something.” If finalized, Amorim’s first game as United manager is expected to be after the international break, likely against Ipswich Town on November 24.
In the meantime, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken on interim duties, overseeing United’s 5-2 League Cup victory over Leicester. As United struggle in 14th place in the Premier League and face challenges in the Europa League, Amorim’s appointment signals a hopeful change for fans and the club’s management alike.
