Rumours: Manchester United Set to Appoint Michael Carrick as Interim Manager

Former Player and Coach Emerges as Preferred Choice to Lead Club for Rest of Season

Manchester United are poised to appoint former midfielder Michael Carrick as their interim head coach for the remainder of the season, with an announcement expected as early as today, according to reports.

The move follows last week’s dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher having overseen the last two matches. Club executives Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada held talks with both Carrick and former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the past few days, with Carrick now emerging as the preferred candidate.

The decision is driven in part by the looming Manchester derby this Saturday against rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford, with the club eager to have a new manager in place to prepare the squad.

Carrick, who served as a coach under Solskjaer and briefly took caretaker charge after his departure in 2021, would inherit a team low on confidence and out of both domestic cup competitions. After Sunday’s 2-1 FA Cup loss to Brighton, Fletcher described the squad as “fragile” and in need of rebuilding belief.

“Confidence is one of the most powerful things in football,” Fletcher said. “When you don’t have confidence, you have to dig deep – and you have to battle, grind, fight, work, win games – and then the confidence comes back.”

Fletcher, who remains in the dark about his own future, emphasized the need for the club to support the players through a challenging period. “It’s not about me,” he said. “It’s all about them. But we need to help them, the club need to help them, and they’re going to need to help themselves.”

If confirmed, Carrick’s immediate task will be to steady the ship and reignite United’s push for European qualification, starting with one of the season’s most daunting fixtures against the champions.
