United Legend Steps In with Determination, Aiming to Reignite Club Spirit and Fortunes
Manchester United interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has shared his feelings of “mixed emotions” following the departure of Erik ten Hag. Ten Hag’s exit comes after a difficult run for United, with only one win in their last eight games. Van Nistelrooy, a former United star who returned as assistant manager earlier this season, has taken on the interim role while the club searches for a permanent replacement. He will make his managerial debut tonight as United hosts Leicester City in the Carabao Cup.
In a message shared in United Review, the club’s official matchday program, van Nistelrooy expressed gratitude to Ten Hag for inviting him back to Old Trafford. “I’m saddened to see him leave,” he wrote. “But even on an interim basis, it’s a great honor to manage the club I love, for however long I am asked. I can promise I’ll give my all to help turn our fortunes around.”
Van Nistelrooy’s return to Old Trafford this summer was part of a reshuffle within Ten Hag’s staff, and he quickly became a fan favorite once again. As he prepares to lead his first game, he acknowledged the challenges but expressed belief in the squad’s potential.
“Despite recent results, I’m loving being back at Old Trafford, working with the team and staff each day,” he wrote. “We’ve glimpsed the squad’s potential this season, but not often enough. Now, it’s time for everyone to unite, give everything, and change the course of our season.”
Van Nistelrooy emphasized the importance of a united front to help the team rebound, drawing on his experience both as a player and coach. “When I returned in the summer, it was because I believe Manchester United can reach the heights I once knew as a player. I still believe that, but it’ll take time and hard work. The first step is to restore the winning habit, starting tonight.”
As Van Nistelrooy takes charge, fans are expected to rally behind him and the team as they fight for a step toward Wembley in tonight’s cup clash. “I know first-hand the incredible effect our fans have on this team,” he concluded. “Let’s get behind the players tonight as we aim to move closer to Wembley.”
