Ruud van Nistelrooy to Depart Manchester United as Ruben Amorim Takes Over as Head Coach

United legend exits after an unbeaten stint as interim manager, marking end of his short tenure at Old Trafford

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s brief yet impactful return to Manchester United is coming to an end as the club confirms his departure following Ruben Amorim’s appointment as head coach. Van Nistelrooy, who joined United in the summer as Erik ten Hag’s assistant and later stepped up as interim manager after Ten Hag’s departure, led the team to two victories over Leicester, a Europa League win against PAOK, and a draw with Chelsea during his four-game tenure.

Amorim, appointed as Ten Hag’s permanent successor on November 1, is set to take the reins in his first Premier League match against Ipswich on November 24. The new head coach expressed admiration for Van Nistelrooy’s work and announced plans to meet with him on Monday to discuss his future with the club.

“Ruud did a fantastic job, and he’s a legend here,” Amorim said to The Athletic. “I plan to talk with him and will be open about the path forward for both of us.”

However, Manchester United later confirmed that Van Nistelrooy would not remain with the team. A club statement thanked Van Nistelrooy for his dedication, stating, “Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution during his interim role and look forward to welcoming him back to Old Trafford anytime.”

Alongside Van Nistelrooy, additional members of Ten Hag’s staff will also depart, including coaches Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel, as Amorim brings in his own team of five, including coaches Carlos Fernandes and Emanuel Ferro, as well as goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital.

Reflecting on his short but memorable time in charge, Van Nistelrooy expressed pride in the team’s performance and resilience. “This was a special period,” he told reporters before United’s 3-0 win over Leicester. “It was important to make it through these four games, and I think we’ve done very well.”

Despite his intention to stay on with the club, Van Nistelrooy acknowledged that his departure does not diminish his affection for United. “I took this role with a vision to build something here,” he shared. “Four games haven’t changed that feeling.”

With Amorim set to lead Manchester United into a new era, Van Nistelrooy leaves behind a legacy of commitment, pride, and the unmistakable spirit of a United legend.
