Salah Defends Alexander-Arnold After Liverpool Fans Boo Departing Star – “He Deserves Better”

Egyptian Forward Calls for Respect as Longtime Teammate Prepares for Emotional Exit

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has spoken out against the club’s supporters for jeering Trent Alexander-Arnold in his first appearance since announcing his impending departure. The England right-back, who confirmed last week he will leave Anfield when his contract expires in June, was met with boos when he came off the bench in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal.

Salah, who himself faced contract uncertainty earlier this season before extending his stay, expressed disappointment at the reaction from fans. Speaking to Sky Sports’ Gary Neville, the Egyptian forward said, “I was surprised—this isn’t how Liverpool fans should act. He didn’t deserve that. He’s given everything for this club, and the supporters should treat him with respect in his final days here.”

Alexander-Arnold, a Liverpool academy graduate, has spent his entire career with the Reds, making 353 appearances and winning multiple trophies, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. Yet, as he nears a likely move to Real Madrid, his farewell has been marred by frustration from some sections of the fanbase.

Salah urged supporters to change their tone in Alexander-Arnold’s last two matches—against Brighton and Crystal Palace—saying, *”Imagine someone dedicating 20 years to this club. It shouldn’t end like this. I hope the fans give him the send-off he deserves because he’s earned it.”*

The 26-year-old defender, a local hero who grew up in Liverpool, has been a key figure in the team’s success under Jürgen Klopp. Salah, who considers him a close friend, admitted the goodbye will be emotional. “I told him, ‘Don’t even look at me during your farewell—I won’t handle it,’” Salah revealed. “I love him, and he’s given everything to this city and this club. He’s one of the best in Liverpool’s history.”

Reflecting on Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave, Salah added, “He’s won everything here, sometimes two or three times over. Maybe he needed a new challenge—I understand that. But no matter what, he deserves to walk out with his head held high.”

As the season draws to a close, all eyes will be on whether Anfield can put aside its frustration and give a proper farewell to one of its own.
