Salah Must Take Initiative to Fix Liverpool Rift, Says Manager Slot

Manager says everyone makes mistakes but suggests forward must take the first step to resolve explosive rift.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has hinted that any reconciliation with Mohamed Salah must be initiated by the player himself, following the dramatic decision to drop the superstar for Tuesday’s crucial 1-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan.

Salah was left off the squad entirely as a direct consequence of his explosive public criticism of Slot and the club over the weekend. The Dutch coach revealed he informed Salah of the decision in a brief but firm conversation on Monday, reminding the forward he is “not weak.”

The team, led by a standout defensive performance from Ibrahima Konaté, responded by grinding out a victory secured by a late Dominik Szoboszlai penalty. In the aftermath, however, the focus remained firmly on the absent Egyptian.

When pressed on whether the mistake was his or Salah’s, Slot offered a telling response. “Well, you say everyone makes mistakes in life,” he began, before pivoting. “The question is should the players also recognise that as well? And should the initiative come from the player or me? That’s another question.”

Slot appeared emboldened by his team’s resilient form in Salah’s absence, noting they have not lost since the decision was made, following heavy defeats to PSV Eindhoven and Nottingham Forest with Salah in the side.

While acknowledging the squad has been affected by the very public fallout—”it’s never nice when something happens to their teammates”—Slot’s comments place the ball firmly in Salah’s court. The message is clear: the path back into the fold for Liverpool’s record-breaking forward may require him to make the first move.
