Salah Stays Tight-Lipped on Contract Talks After Leading Liverpool to Victory

The Egyptian star focused on festive wishes and upcoming matches while avoiding questions about his expiring contract.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah remained coy about his future after scoring in a 3-1 Boxing Day victory over Leicester City. The win propelled the Reds seven points clear at the top of the Premier League following Chelsea’s earlier defeat.

Salah’s Uncertain Future

The 32-year-old forward, who netted his 16th goal of the season, is one of three key Liverpool players—alongside Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold—whose contracts expire at the end of the campaign. From January 1, they will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs.

When asked about his contract situation post-match, Salah sidestepped the question. Instead, he wished Liverpool fans a happy holiday season and shifted focus to the team’s upcoming clash against Manchester United on New Year’s Day.

“I want to tell [the fans] Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” Salah told Amazon Prime. “And I’ll see them in the next game here.”

Manager Plays It Cool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot also refrained from offering clarity on Salah’s contract talks, a stance he has consistently taken since his summer arrival.

“We don’t talk about contracts in public,” Slot said. “This is something for the players and [sporting director] Richard Hughes. It’s not up to me to discuss those situations in public.

“But it’s clear that Mo [Salah] again had a good game. Van Dijk had a very good game, Trent for the most part was very good—one or two exceptions—but especially the second half, really good. That we can talk about, not about the contracts.”

Reds Extend Lead at the Top

The match saw Liverpool recover from an early scare, with Leicester taking the lead after six minutes. Goals from Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, and Salah secured the comeback, further cementing the team’s title credentials.

The victory gives Liverpool a commanding lead at the top of the Premier League table, widening the gap to defending champions Manchester City to a staggering 14 points. With a game in hand over their rivals, Slot’s men are in a strong position to reclaim domestic glory.

Arsenal, however, have a chance to narrow the gap to six points when they face Ipswich at the Emirates on Friday night.

For now, Liverpool fans must balance the excitement of their team’s dominant form with the uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future. As January approaches, the focus will inevitably shift to whether the Egyptian star extends his stay at Anfield or begins a new chapter elsewhere.
