Former Premier League Manager Expects Points Deduction as Worst-Case Scenario for Alleged Violations
Former Premier League manager Sam Allardyce has weighed in on the potential consequences for Manchester City if they are found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. The reigning Premier League champions are facing over 100 charges related to alleged violations of FFP regulations between 2009 and 2018. The case was referred to an independent commission earlier this year, following a four-year investigation into the club’s financial conduct.
If found guilty, Manchester City could face a range of punishments, including fines, points deductions, transfer bans, or even expulsion from the Premier League. However, Allardyce believes that a points deduction is the most severe penalty they are likely to receive.
“If it’s on the three counts, then possibly 10 points, maybe 12. If it’s really big, maybe 15,” Allardyce told Footy Accumulators. “People are talking about relegation, but if it’s just boiling down to those three, then it’s a points deduction, and they can live with that fine and will get on with it.”
Earlier this year, Manchester City fought back against the Premier League, launching a campaign for the removal of the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules. The outcome of this case has not yet been disclosed, and it is unlikely that the public will be informed of the verdict until the conclusion of the FFP hearing, which is expected to stretch into next year.
Allardyce criticized the Premier League for the timing of the court case, suggesting that having the proceedings during the season was a poor decision. “They’ve already put Man City in a position where they can’t relegate them because they’ve let the season start,” he said. “Having the court case while the season’s on is an absolutely ridiculous decision by the Premier League.”
Despite speculation about potential relegation, Allardyce downplayed the likelihood of such a severe outcome, adding that Manchester City would likely accept a points deduction if found guilty. “If there’s no appeal after that and Man City have to take it on the chin, they will get on with it. If there’s another appeal avenue, then Man City will exploit it if they’re unhappy with the outcome because that’s their right.”
The ongoing case is set to be one of the most significant legal battles in Premier League history, with the final decision potentially reshaping the landscape of English football.
