Saudi Pro League Denies Ronaldo Influence Over Club Transfers

In a pointed statement, league officials assert “no individual” directs policy as speculation swirls around the star’s absence and reported frustration.

The Saudi Pro League has issued a firm rebuttal to reports that Cristiano Ronaldo refused to play for Al-Nassr due to dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer strategy. The league’s response comes after the 41-year-old superstar was notably absent from the squad for Monday’s match against Al-Riyadh, amid speculation linking him with a move away.

Ronaldo’s reported frustration was sparked by title rivals Al-Hilal’s high-profile signing of his former Real Madrid teammate, Karim Benzema. However, the Pro League moved quickly to refute the narrative that Ronaldo could influence broader club decisions.

In a statement to BBC Sport, a league spokesperson emphasized the independence of each club, saying, “No individual – however significant – determines decisions beyond their own club.” The statement highlighted that while Al-Hilal strengthened in one way, Al-Nassr “chose a different approach,” with all choices made within a unified financial framework designed for sustainability and competitive balance.

Since Ronaldo’s landmark signing in late 2022—which made him the highest-paid footballer in history—the league has seen a transformation, with 48 transfers exceeding previous record fees. Al-Nassr themselves have spent over £350 million in the last three windows on stars like Sadio Mané and Aymeric Laporte. Despite this investment, trophies have eluded them, with two second-place finishes in three seasons, while Al-Hilal have claimed four pieces of silverware.

The spokesperson added, “The competitiveness of the league speaks for itself,” noting the close title race where Al-Nassr sit third, just four points behind leaders Al-Hilal with a game in hand. Ronaldo remains pivotal on the pitch, with 17 league goals in 18 appearances this season as he chases the historic milestone of 1,000 senior career goals.

As Al-Nassr prepare to host reigning champions Al-Ittihad, all eyes are on whether Ronaldo will return to the lineup, with the league maintaining that the focus should remain “on the pitch, where it belongs.”
