World Cup winner urges shock international comeback for legendary goalkeeper as injury sidelines first-choice Ter Stegen.
Former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger has publicly advocated for a sensational return of Manuel Neuer to the national team, amid a growing goalkeeper crisis ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The debate reignited after current number one Marc-Andre ter Stegen underwent back surgery and lost his starting position at Barcelona.

Speaking candidly on ARD ahead of Germany’s qualifier against Slovakia, Schweinsteiger left no doubt about his preferred solution. “When it comes to this topic, I always look around the world to see who has a German passport,” he stated. “And then I end up with Manuel Neuer. He recently demonstrated his exceptional performance at the Club World Cup. I would bring Manuel Neuer back – he has that certain aura.”
The German Football Association faces a genuine dilemma. Ter Stegen’s injuries have severely limited his playing time, creating uncertainty about his availability despite coach Julian Nagelsmann previously stating the Barcelona keeper remained his first choice when fully fit.
Neuer, who retired from international football after Euro 2024 following 124 appearances, has been displaying world-class form for Bayern Munich. Schweinsteiger, who won the 2014 World Cup alongside Neuer, believes convincing his former teammate to return wouldn’t be difficult: “He’s fit, he plays at a top level – why not?”
For now, Nagelsmann has turned to Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann to fill the void. But as qualification continues, the calls for Neuer’s comeback are likely to grow louder, especially if Germany struggles between the posts.
