Kogi lawmaker insists on resuming duties after court ruling, sparking tensions at legislative complex
A dramatic scene unfolded at Nigeria’s National Assembly on Tuesday as suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan arrived to resume her legislative duties, defying leadership directives and prompting heightened security measures at the federal legislature.
The Kogi Central senator, whose suspension has been mired in controversy, walked into the complex surrounded by enthusiastic supporters who had gathered since morning to welcome her. Her arrival came exactly as promised – on Tuesday, July 22 – following her weekend declaration that she would return based on a Federal High Court ruling by Justice Binta Nyako.
Security personnel had visibly reinforced their presence at the Assembly gates since early morning, with armed officers strategically positioned to maintain order. Viral social media footage showed an unusual security buildup, reflecting the tense anticipation surrounding the senator’s controversial return attempt.
The Senate leadership, through its spokesman Senator Yemi Adaramodu, had preemptively dismissed Natasha’s move on Sunday, describing the court decision she referenced as merely an “advisory opinion” rather than a binding order compelling her reinstatement.
Undeterred by the Senate’s position, the embattled lawmaker pressed ahead with her planned resumption, setting the stage for a potential constitutional showdown between the legislative and judicial arms of government. The development marks the latest chapter in an ongoing political drama that has captivated the nation’s attention.
As at press time, it remained unclear whether Senator Natasha would successfully access the legislative chambers or how the Senate leadership would respond to her defiant return attempt. The situation continues to unfold under the watchful eyes of security forces and anxious supporters at the National Assembly complex.
