Nigerian Football Faces Uncertainty as Coach Quits Amid World Cup Qualifiers
Nigerian football is in shock after Finidi George, the recently appointed head coach of the Super Eagles, resigned unexpectedly. George, who took the role just last month, had a disappointing start, with the team securing only one point from their first two World Cup qualifiers.
George’s resignation comes as a surprise, especially after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser to boost the team’s performance. Neither George nor the NFF has provided an official reason for his sudden departure.
The 53-year-old former Nigerian international, who was part of the 1994 African Cup of Nations-winning squad, began his tenure in May. However, his short stint was plagued by poor results, putting the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup at risk.
George’s resignation creates a leadership void within the national team, putting pressure on the NFF to quickly find a suitable replacement. The federation must act swiftly to prepare the team for the remaining crucial World Cup qualifying matches.
As more information about George’s resignation comes to light, the future of the Super Eagles World Cup Qualification remains uncertain.
