In a twist of fate, young winger Facundo Buonanotte has been handed a surprise opportunity to make his Champions League debut for Chelsea. The Argentine, on loan from Brighton, has been called up to the Blues’ European squad to replace the injured Dario Essugo.
The change comes after a blow for Portuguese youth international Essugo, who suffered a thigh injury while on duty with Portugal’s U21s and has since undergone surgery. His unfortunate setback has opened the door for Buonanotte, who was initially left out of Manager Enzo Maresca’s squad for the league stage of the prestigious tournament.
This late call-up means the 19-year-old could now be in line to feature on European club football’s biggest stage. Chelsea fans could get their first glimpse of Buonanotte in the competition as soon as Wednesday evening, when the Blues host German giants Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge in a blockbuster Group Stage clash.
