Atlético Boss Regrets Taunting Real Madrid Winger Over Future Remarks and Crowd Gestures
Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has issued a public apology for his inflammatory touchline behavior during last week’s heated Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Real Madrid, though he notably stopped short of seeking forgiveness.
The fiery Argentine was caught on camera repeatedly taunting Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior, including reportedly telling him, “Florentino will kick you out — remember what I’m telling you,” in reference to the player’s uncertain contract situation. Simeone also gestured toward sections of the crowd that were booing Vinícius as he was substituted.

“I would like to apologize to Mr. Florentino and Mr. Vinícius for the incident they witnessed,” Simeone said at a press conference on Monday ahead of his side’s Copa del Rey match. “It was wrong of me to put myself in that position… The team that wins deserves to go through.”
When pressed further, however, the coach clarified his stance: “I apologize, but I do not ask for forgiveness. I have nothing more to add.”
Real Madrid went on to win the match 2-1 before losing the final to Barcelona, with Vinícius scoring a brilliant individual goal to end his goal drought. Madrid manager Xabi Alonso described Simeone’s behavior as “not an example of a good sportsman.”
The apology comes amid a challenging period for Atlético, who sit fourth in La Liga, 11 points behind leaders Barcelona. For now, Simeone has acknowledged his overstep—but made it clear his regret comes with limits.
