After a 4-0 thrashing by the Gunners, the Atletico Madrid manager pointedly named Arsenal the best team his club has faced this season.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone delivered a pointed verdict after his team’s 4-0 dismantling by Arsenal on Tuesday, directly naming the Gunners the “best team” his side has faced this season—a clear slight against Liverpool.
The heavy defeat at the Emirates Stadium marks a miserable Champions League tour of England for Simeone’s squad, who last month conceded a heartbreaking 92nd-minute winner to Virgil van Dijk in a 3-2 loss at Anfield.
Despite that recent, turbulent match, the Argentine coach was unequivocal. When asked if Arsenal were his toughest opponent, he stated through a translator, “Yes, I’d say the best team we’ve faced this season. Arsenal, they compete so well, they run and they run; there’s quality all over the pitch.”
The match turned decisively in a blistering 13-minute spell in the second half. After a goalless first period, Gabriel Magalhaes broke the deadlock, Gabriel Martinelli quickly added a second, and a double from Viktor Gyokeres completed the rout.
Simeone pointed to a turning point, suggesting fortune did not favour his side. “I thought we competed really well to begin with,” he reflected. “There were two situations in the game that didn’t go our way. And then from 60 minutes onwards, well they were the better team.”
The victory preserves Arsenal’s perfect start to their Champions League campaign. For Liverpool, however, Simeone’s post-match comments will feel like a final, lingering blow from a frustrating English double-header.
