Coach Praises Team’s Resilience and Griezmann’s Impact Following 3-0 Victory
Atletico Madrid delivered a statement performance on Thursday, cruising to a 3-0 victory over local rivals Rayo Vallecano at home. The win, fueled by goals from Alexander Sorloth, Conor Gallagher, and Julián Álvarez, helped Diego Simeone’s side bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 loss to Las Palmas last weekend—and solidify their hold on third place in LaLiga.
Simeone, known for his fiery passion, was pleased with his team’s response but stressed the need to maintain focus as the season reaches its climax. “Scoring goals now doesn’t frustrate me—it’s all part of the journey,” the Argentine manager told reporters. “Football is unpredictable, and we have to be ready for anything. We’ve been competing well in the league, and I hope we can keep this momentum until the very end.”
While Atletico sit comfortably in third, they trail Barcelona by 10 points and Real Madrid by six, making the title race a distant dream. Still, Simeone emphasized the importance of defensive stability as they push through the final matches.
“We were poor against Las Palmas, and even today, the first half wasn’t perfect,” he admitted. “But we fought back, and I’m happy with the defensive effort—that’s the foundation of everything we do.”
The manager also singled out Antoine Griezmann for praise after the Frenchman came off the bench to set up Álvarez’s goal with a brilliant assist. “Antoine changed the game when he came on,” Simeone said. “He unlocked their defense and made the difference. As for Julián, his goals tell you everything about him as a player. We’re also getting to know him as a person—he’s here to win, and we’ll do everything to help him succeed.”
With the Champions League spots in sight, Atletico will look to build on this momentum as they aim to finish the season on a high.
