Slot Admits Liverpool Couldn’t Create Enough After Frustrating Anfield Draw

Boss Rues Lack of Cutting Edge as Leeds Stifle Reds in Goalless Stalemate

Liverpool manager Arne Slot delivered a blunt assessment of his team’s shortcomings after they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Leeds United at Anfield, admitting his side lacks the creativity to turn possession into points.

The Reds dominated the ball with 69% possession but failed to carve out clear chances against a disciplined Leeds side, who extended their unbeaten run and even had a late Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal chalked off for offside.

“Ball possession doesn’t mean a lot if you can’t create enough chances,” a visibly frustrated Slot said in his post-match press conference. “To create chances against a low block, you need pace and individual special moments. We didn’t have enough of that today.”

The draw—Liverpool’s first goalless stalemate at Anfield in two years—leaves them fourth in the table, 12 points behind leaders Arsenal. Slot pointed to the challenge of breaking down deep-lying defenses, a recurring issue this season.

“What were we missing? A goal. That’s the simplest answer,” he said. “Against a team defending so well, you need moments of magic or set pieces. We had eight corners and were close with Virgil [van Dijk], but it wasn’t enough.”

Slot also addressed a first-half incident where striker Hugo Ekitike stayed on his feet despite appearing to be held in the box, with no penalty awarded. “If he had fallen down, it probably would have been a penalty,” Slot conceded. “But maybe our players try too hard to stay on their feet because we haven’t been getting those calls.”

The result underscores a growing concern for Slot: Liverpool’s possession-heavy approach is not translating into the attacking threat needed to keep pace in the title race. With the January window open, the Dutchman faces mounting pressure to find solutions—either on the training ground or in the transfer market—to reignite his team’s spark.
