Slot Refuses to Blame Youth After Liverpool’s Defeat Deepens Slump

The Liverpool manager admitted he is “not surprised” by his team’s poor form, citing a brutal schedule and injury crisis, but insisted “none of the reasons are good enough” for losing six of seven games.

Liverpool’s alarming slump stretched to six losses in seven matches after a 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, but a defiant Arne Slot stood by his decision to field a youthful team, pointing to an injury-ravaged squad and a congested fixture list as the root cause of the team’s struggles.

With a threadbare senior squad, Slot named three teenagers in his starting eleven and saw his young side overrun by a more experienced Palace team. Despite the result, the Dutch manager expressed no regrets over his team selection, emphasizing that the club has a tradition of using the competition to give academy players a chance.

“I saw some of the struggles that the players have had,” Slot said in a frank post-match press conference. “To play at Premier League and Champions League level, three games in seven days, is a new challenge for them.” He revealed that the club currently has only “15 or 16 players available,” forcing his hand.

However, Slot was quick to hold the team to a higher standard, refusing to use the circumstances as a full excuse. “I can come up with arguments or reasons, but none of them will be enough,” he stated, acknowledging that at a club of Liverpool’s stature, “losing six out of seven is always too much.”

The defeat marks the third time this season Liverpool has fallen to Palace, and the pressure is mounting as the team prepares to host Aston Villa this weekend, desperate to rediscover their winning form.
