Slot Says Restoring Salah Was An Easy Decision After Win

Liverpool manager praises returning star’s impact in victory over Brighton following clear-the-air talks.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said it was a straightforward choice to bring Mohamed Salah back into the fold, after the Egyptian made a decisive return in Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Salah, who was left out of the squad for Tuesday’s Champions League trip to Inter Milan following a public fallout, was named among the substitutes at Anfield. He entered the match earlier than planned, replacing the injured Joe Gomez in the 26th minute to a roaring, emotional welcome from the home supporters.

“It was an easy decision to put him in the squad,” Slot stated after the match. “We needed him.”

The reunion followed a tense period sparked by Salah’s frustrated comments after being an unused substitute in the draw at Leeds last weekend—the third straight league game he had started on the bench. The situation prompted clear-the-air talks between the player and his manager earlier in the week.

Once on the pitch, Salah quickly reminded everyone of his value. His clever inswinging corner in the second half was headed home by Hugo Ekitike for Liverpool’s clinching second goal.

“I think he was a threat,” Slot told Sky Sports. “The first ball he touched, he almost made an assist. He was constantly involved. Pleasing to see, but not a surprise.”

With Salah now set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations, Slot acknowledged his imminent absence but focused on the positive resolution. “He goes to AFCON and that means for us another player down,” the Dutchman said. “This is what we knew before the season started.”

For one afternoon at least, harmony was restored, and Salah’s contribution proved crucial in extending Liverpool’s unbeaten run.
