Liverpool’s crisis deepens with a fourth straight league loss as the manager condemns a fundamental failure in their 3-2 defeat to Brentford.
Liverpool’s alarming collapse hit a new low on Saturday, with manager Arne Slot branding a 3-2 defeat to Brentford as “the worst” of their current four-game losing streak and lamenting his team’s failure to execute the fundamentals.
A visibly frustrated Slot did not mince words after goals from Dango Ouattara, Kevin Schade, and an Igor Thiago penalty sealed a pulsating victory for The Bees.
“The most concerning thing is that you lose four times in a row,” Slot told TNT Sports. “Today was the worst… We didn’t do the basics right. They won more duels than us, they won more second balls than us.”
The defeat, which heard Brentford supporters taunt Slot with chants of “sacked in the morning,” was compounded by a pivotal VAR-awarded penalty. Slot called the decision “unlucky,” but conceded that after going 3-1 down, Brentford looked more likely to score again than his side did to equalize.
The performance drew sharp criticism from pundits, with former Liverpool star Steve McManaman describing the team as “chaotic” and playing like “individuals.” Fellow analyst Joe Cole called the number of changes from last year’s title-winning starting eleven “madness.”
The scale of the decline is stark. Liverpool have now lost as many league games this season as in the entirety of their title-winning campaign.
Amid the turmoil, captain Virgil van Dijk issued a rallying cry. “It’s not an easy moment,” he admitted. “We need each other… I am sure we will get out of this.”
But with a crucial match against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday, Slot and his players must find answers quickly to stop their title defense from spiraling further out of control.
