Gunners Legend Urges Clarity as £50m Chelsea Winger Nears Shock Switch
Arsenal icon Sol Campbell has called on the club to explain their surprise pursuit of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, admitting fans are left “scratching their heads” over the £50m deal.

The Gunners are set to make Madueke their third summer signing after already securing Spain internationals Kepa Arrizabalaga and Martin Zubimendi. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the move late Thursday, declaring “here we go” as the 22-year-old England international prepares to swap Stamford Bridge for the Emirates on a five-year deal.
Despite Madueke’s flashes of brilliance last season—seven goals and three assists in the Premier League—he was far from a guaranteed starter at Chelsea. Campbell, while acknowledging the youngster’s talent, believes Arsenal must justify the investment to supporters.
“I’ve seen him play, and he’s a dynamic, hardworking player who can hurt teams in the final third,” the Invincibles legend told The Metro. “But most fans are probably thinking, ‘Do we need him?’. The club should explain how he fits our system—that clarity matters to players and fans alike.”
The signing raises further questions about Gabriel Martinelli’s role, with Campbell suggesting Arteta is deliberately turning up the heat on the Brazilian. “I love Martinelli, but he’s not displacing Saka on the right,” he said. “Competition is good, but Saka’s been incredibly reliable—until that injury last season.”
With Arsenal also linked to Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera and Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, Arteta’s squad overhaul shows no signs of slowing—leaving fans eager to hear the long-term vision behind the moves.
