UEFA Blames “Unexpected Discrepancy” as Tottenham’s Overenthusiasm Leads to Medal Shortage
It was a night of triumph for Tottenham Hotspur as they lifted the Europa League trophy after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester United—but not every player got their moment on the podium. Captain Son Heung-min, along with Rodrigo Bentancur and Cristian Romero, walked away empty-handed during the medal ceremony, leaving fans confused and UEFA officials scrambling for answers.
The issue arose when Spurs sent more players to collect medals than UEFA had anticipated. While winners and runners-up each receive 50 medals to distribute, only 30 are typically brought onto the pitch for the presentation. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin was visibly surprised when the medals ran out, exchanging glances with his staff as Son and others were left waiting.
In a statement, UEFA admitted: “To our great displeasure, we did not have enough medals available on stage due to an unexpected discrepancy in the player count, as more team members—including injured players—participated in the ceremony than initially anticipated.” The governing body later delivered the missing medals to Tottenham’s dressing room and apologized for the oversight.
Some of the responsibility may lie with Spurs themselves. The club included players like Sergio Reguilón, who didn’t feature in the competition, ahead of key figures like Son. But given Tottenham’s long wait for silverware, their eagerness to share in the moment is understandable.
As the celebrations continue, Spurs now turn their attention to the final Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend—hopefully with all medals accounted for.
