South African Advocacy Group Calls for Miss Universe Nigeria’s Removal Amid Identity Fraud Allegations

Petition Gains Momentum as Concerns Over Chidimma Adetshina’s Pageant Entry Emerge

Progressive Forces, an advocacy group in South Africa, has launched a petition seeking to prevent Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Universe Nigeria, from competing in the 2024 Miss Universe pageant. This comes after Adetshina recently arrived in Mexico to represent Nigeria in the global competition, set for November.

Adetshina, recently crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, faced backlash during her earlier participation in South Africa’s own national pageant. The controversy began when South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs shared findings that suggest Adetshina’s mother may have been involved in identity fraud, an issue that ultimately led Adetshina to withdraw from Miss South Africa and accept an invitation to represent Nigeria.

Progressive Forces filed their petition on Wednesday, arguing that Adetshina’s involvement could compromise the reputation and values of the Miss Universe brand. Within 24 hours, the petition attracted over 1,000 signatures, underscoring concerns over Adetshina’s potential participation.

“We are greatly concerned about Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Universe Nigeria, whose mother has been found guilty of committing identity fraud. On October 29, Home Affairs canceled both Adetshina and her mother’s identities by court order. We are writing on behalf of everyone who stands for justice to plead with Miss Universe to cancel her entry,” the petition stated.

As the Miss Universe pageant nears, Progressive Forces’ petition highlights the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Adetshina’s eligibility and underscores the potential implications for the international competition.
