Southgate’s Future as England Manager Secured by FA

FA Wants Southgate to Stay Regardless of Euro 2024 Final Outcome

England’s manager, Gareth Southgate, has revealed that his future with the national team could be uncertain if they fail to win the Euro 2024 final against Spain. Speaking to German news outlet BILD, Southgate admitted, “If we don’t win, I probably won’t be here anymore. So maybe it is the last chance. I think around half the national coaches leave after a tournament — that’s the nature of international football.”

Southgate, who has been in charge for nearly eight years, acknowledged the pressure of constantly meeting public expectations. “You can’t constantly put yourself in front of the public and say, ‘A little more please’, as at some point people lose faith,” he said.

However, as reported by The Telegraph, the Football Association (FA) has decided that they want Southgate to continue as England manager regardless of the outcome of Sunday’s final. The report states: “Southgate’s contract runs until December with talks over his future past then shelved until after the Euros. But the FA chiefs want Southgate to extend his contract and lead England into the 2026 World Cup, regardless of how they fare against Spain.”

The FA believes that reaching the final of Euro 2024 is already a significant achievement, even if England does not win the trophy. A full review of the tournament will take place after its conclusion.

Mark Bullingham, the chief executive of the FA, expressed strong support for Southgate last month, saying, “I think the world of Gareth, I think he has done a phenomenal job. He has transformed the fortunes of our team, and that’s not just off the pitch, but also the performances on the pitch. Since 1966, he has won about half of our knockout games, which is a measure we really use, so we value him massively.”
