Mbappé, playing what could be one of his final European games for Los Blancos before his expected move to Real Madrid this summer, was a shadow of his usual world-beating self. The 26-year-old had an early goal ruled out for offside and saw a potential penalty decision overturned by VAR before limping off injured after 75 minutes – a fitting end to a forgettable night.
Spanish newspaper MARCA handed him a brutal 4.5/10 rating, lamenting: “He wasn’t the Mbappé we expected on nights like this. Forced a penalty shout, but otherwise drifted through the game before exiting injured.” Mundo Deportivo was even harsher, declaring: “It was supposed to be his night, but he barely threatened. A major disappointment.”
Even AS turned on Madrid’s entire attack, writing: “Mbappé failed to ignite, just like Vinícius, Bellingham, and Rodrygo. The fans had enough by the end.”
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti admitted his side were second best, saying: “Arsenal were better than us in both games. We lacked that extra spark, that collective belief we had last season.”
While Arsenal march on to a semi-final clash with PSG, Mbappé’s final Champions League chapter with his current club ended not with a bang, but a whimper – leaving Spanish media and fans wondering if the superstar will ever truly shine on this stage for Real Madrid.
