Speed Darlington Released on Bail After Five Days in Police Custody

Musician’s Detention Stems from Defamation Allegations Filed by Burna Boy

Musician and social media personality Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been released on bail after spending five days in police custody. His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, announced the news on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday night.

Speed Darlington was reportedly arrested in Lagos last Friday and subsequently transferred to Abuja. His detention followed a formal complaint filed by Grammy Award-winning singer Burna Boy, who accused him of defamation and cyberstalking.

Adeyanju expressed gratitude to those who supported his client’s release and commended the police for their professionalism. In his post, he stated:

“Special appreciation to Egbon @YeleSowore, super reliable senior lawyer @stanalieke and to all Nigerians for raising their voice for Speed Darlington. Must also appreciate Prof Sanusi and his team at IRT for the professionalism today.”

The legal tussle originated after Speed Darlington posted a video in which he taunted Burna Boy, questioning how he won a Grammy for his album Twice As Tall and bringing up Burna Boy’s past association with embattled US rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, who is currently facing serious charges.

A video had surfaced online showing Speed Darlington in handcuffs, confirming his arrest, after earlier reports claimed the musician had gone missing. Following his release, his legal team continues to address the situation as the case progresses.
