Controversial Rapper Criticizes Nigerian Law Enforcement, Blames System Issues for Phone Seizure and Delays
Nigerian-American rapper Speed Darlington has called out police authorities in Abuja for withholding his phone after his arrest earlier this year over alleged cyberstalking of Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy. Currently back in the United States, Speed Darlington voiced his frustration on social media, calling on the police to return his property and criticizing the situation as emblematic of Nigeria’s wider social issues.
“The police in Abuja haven’t given me my phone. I’m in America now, but I want my phone back,” Darlington shared, saying his ongoing police issue reflects the frustrations that divide Nigerians. He expressed dismay over potential summons to Abuja for simply mentioning officers’ names and warned that he’s ready to “change it” if the phone isn’t returned, adding, “If you want to file a criminal case, go ahead—I’ll be there to defend myself.”
The artist’s arrest followed Burna Boy’s petition against him for alleged cyberstalking, which led to his detention by the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja. Darlington spent three days in detention before being released on bail, though his phone remained in police possession. He explained that his lawyer assured him there’s no specific law against cyberstalking in Nigeria, insisting he hadn’t violated any law in his remarks about Burna Boy.
Tensions have simmered between the two artists, with Darlington previously questioning Burna Boy’s rise to fame and connections to American rapper and producer Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Darlington alleged that after Burna Boy met P. Diddy and took photos, he went on to win a Grammy—implying a connection between the events and hinting that Burna Boy’s success was part of a larger narrative.
Following his release from detention, Darlington took to Instagram Live, warning he would hold Burna Boy accountable and even claimed the Grammy winner would eventually “beg for his account number.” Burna Boy has yet to respond publicly to these allegations.
