Super Eagles Defender Bruno Onyemaechi Slams Libya’s Tactics After AFCON Qualifier

Nigeria left-back criticizes Libyan players for time-wasting antics during dramatic late victory.

Super Eagles defender Bruno Onyemaechi has taken to social media to criticize Libya’s time-wasting tactics during Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Friday evening. Nigeria secured a late 1-0 victory over the Mediterranean Knights thanks to an 86th-minute goal from substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, assisted by Moses Simon.

Onyemaechi expressed frustration with the Libyan players, accusing them of intentionally slowing the game and disrupting Nigeria’s momentum. “Omo, CAF should give them an award for wasting time,” the Boavista defender wrote on X (formerly Twitter), sarcastically suggesting Libya deserved recognition for their antics.

The Super Eagles had struggled to break down the Libyan defense, with the Mediterranean Knights repeatedly delaying play. Libyan goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi was even booked by Malawian referee Godfrey Nkhakananga for time-wasting during the match.

Nigeria’s head coach Augustine Eguavoen echoed Onyemaechi’s sentiments in the post-match press conference, accusing the Libyans of wasting as much as fifteen minutes in the second half to frustrate his team.

Onyemaechi played the full 90 minutes in the crucial victory, marking his third consecutive start in Nigeria’s AFCON qualifying campaign. The Super Eagles remain on course to qualify for the 2025 tournament, as they continue to build momentum with this important win.
