With star striker Victor Osimhen in tow, Nigeria’s national team holds its first training session ahead of a critical pair of qualifiers.
The Nigerian national team has begun its final preparations in South Africa, holding a light first training session on Tuesday ahead of their must-win FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho this Friday.
The mood was positive as the Super Eagles, under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, took to the pitch in Polokwane. The session saw 17 of the squad’s players participate, with more stars expected to join the camp throughout the day.
All eyes were on Galatasaray’s prolific forward Victor Osimhen, who trained alongside a strong contingent of teammates. The group included captain William Troost-Ekong, African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, and Samuel Chukwueze, signaling a near-full-strength squad is assembling for the crucial clash.
The team finds itself in a precarious position in Group C, sitting in third place behind Benin Republic and South Africa after a surprisingly slow start to their campaign. With only the group winner guaranteed a spot at the World Cup, every match is now critical.
The upcoming fixture against Lesotho is particularly poignant, as it serves as a reminder of their rocky start. The Super Eagles were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by the same opponents in Uyo last November, a result that immediately put their qualifying hopes under pressure.
After facing Lesotho on Friday, Nigeria will travel to face Benin Republic just four days later in what promises to be a decisive week for their World Cup dreams.
