Super Eagles End Standoff, Return to Training Ahead of Crucial World Cup Clash

Player Protest Over Unpaid Bonuses Resolved After High-Level Talks in Rabat

In a major relief for Nigerian football fans, the Super Eagles have called off their training boycott and are set to resume preparations for their crucial World Cup playoff against Gabon after a dispute over unpaid allowances was resolved.

The resolution was announced in a brief but welcome message in the team’s official media group on Wednesday afternoon, stating: “Issues resolved. Super Eagles to train at 5 p.m.”

This update ends a tense 24-hour period of uncertainty that had gripped the Nigerian camp. On Tuesday, the entire squad, along with team officials, took a stand by refusing to train. The protest was over outstanding bonuses and allowances that players claim have been owed for years.

The dramatic boycott, which quickly made headlines around the sports world, prompted swift emergency talks. The situation was salvaged after a high-level meeting in Rabat involving the players, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, and officials from the National Sports Commission.

With the air cleared, the entire 24-man squad, including star players like Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, and captain William Troost-Ekong, is now fully focused and available for Thursday’s match.

The team’s evening training session is expected to focus on tactical plans to outmaneuver the Gabon national team. The resolution is a particular relief for head coach Eric Chelle, whose critical preparations had been thrown into disarray by the standoff.

With the crisis now behind them, the Super Eagles can turn their full attention back to the pitch and their mission: securing a victory against Gabon to keep their hopes alive of returning to the FIFA World Cup after missing the 2022 tournament.
