Team’s chartered flight diverted, forcing players to endure extended travel time
The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced unexpected delays on Sunday night when Libyan authorities held the team at Al-Abaq Airport. According to Promise Efoghe, the team’s media officer, the Super Eagles’ chartered aircraft was nearing Benghazi when it was abruptly diverted to another city, over two hours away from their intended destination.
The Nigerian squad had departed for Libya earlier that morning for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match. The disruption came after Libya’s national team had complained about their treatment upon arriving in Nigeria for the first leg of the qualifying fixture, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 86th-minute goal secured the Super Eagles’ victory in the tightly contested match, leaving Libya’s Nasser Al-Hadiri and his squad disappointed. The incident at the airport only added to the tension between the two sides following the match.
