Forest Striker Shares Emotional Message as He Begins Recovery From Serious Collision
Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has broken his silence with an emotional social media post after waking from an induced coma following a terrifying injury during last weekend’s match against Leicester City.
The Nigerian international, who collided with a goalpost late in the 2-2 draw, underwent emergency surgery before being placed in a medically induced coma. In his first public statement since regaining consciousness, the 26-year-old shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: “With the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, to still be smiling.”
Forest manager Nuno EspÃrito Santo provided reassurance about his player’s condition, telling reporters: “He is in good hands with his family. The surgery went well, thank God. This season has been so hard on him – he’s a wonderful boy.” The Portuguese coach revealed players have been sending constant messages of support through team chat groups.
Awoniyi, who spent six years at Liverpool before joining Forest, expressed deep gratitude to teammates, staff and fans who visited him in hospital: “Seeing you all lifted my spirits more than words can say.” He also sent encouragement to his teammates for their final two Premier League matches, promising: “I can’t wait to be back out there doing what I love.”
The striker made special mention of the outpouring of support from his Nigerian homeland, emotionally adding: “I see them. I feel them. And I carry them with me every day as I recover.” Medical staff will continue monitoring Awoniyi for at least five more days as he begins what promises to be a challenging rehabilitation process.
