Tems Makes History as First African Woman with Seven Billboard Hot 100 Hits

The Grammy-winning singer reaches a major U.S. chart milestone, tying the record for most entries by any African artist.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has broken new ground in the global music scene, becoming the first African female artist to land seven songs on the prestigious U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The Grammy-winner, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, achieved the milestone this week when her track “What You Need” made a surprise debut at number 93. This latest entry brings her total to seven, placing her in a historic tie with fellow Nigerian superstar Burna Boy and the South African rock group Seether for the most Billboard Hot 100 entries by any African artist.

“This feels like a beautiful affirmation,” the singer shared in a recent statement. “It shows that our sound, our stories, are being heard and felt everywhere.”

Tems first etched her name into the charts in a major way in 2022 with “Wait For U,” her collaboration with Future and Drake, which soared to number one. That achievement made her the first African artist ever to debut at the top of the Hot 100.

Her unique blend of soulful vocals and atmospheric production has steadily built a powerful resonance with American audiences, paving the way for this latest record. And her historic run is likely not over. Industry trackers predict that a new collaboration with J. Cole and Future, titled “Bunce Road Blues,” is almost certain to debut on the chart next week. If so, Tems will stand alone with eight entries, claiming the sole record for the most Billboard Hot 100 hits by an African artist.

This milestone cements Tems’ position not just as a leading voice in Afrobeats, but as a formidable and record-setting force in mainstream global music.
