The Nigerian superstar’s hit collaboration ‘Wait For U’ with Future and Drake reaches a monumental milestone, paving the way for a rare Diamond certification and cementing her status as a stateside hitmaker.
Nigerian singer Tems has shattered records, officially becoming the first female African artist to surpass 10 million single sales in the United States. The monumental achievement was driven by the runaway success of her collaborative hit with Future and Drake, “Wait For U,” which recently crossed the 10-million-unit mark according to the chart-tracking platform Chart Data.
This staggering sales figure not only makes history but also qualifies the song for one of the music industry’s highest honors: a Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
With this feat, Tems, whose real name is Temilade Openiyi, follows in the footsteps of her compatriot Wizkid, who was the first African artist to hit this mark with the global anthem “One Dance.” She now stands alone as the trailblazing queen of the chart, solidifying her title as the best-selling female African artist in U.S. history.
Her stateside dominance is further underscored by the impressive certifications of her other beloved tracks, including “Essence,” “Free Mind,” and “Me & U,” which have all been certified Platinum or Gold, proving her widespread and lasting appeal.
